How To Turn Off Amber Alerts On Android And iPhone Easy Method

Those intrusive AMBER alerts can be turned off right in your iPhone And Android settings. Here's how to avoid being guilted into searching for missing kids.

Amber alerts, those well-meaning but intrusive alerts that your Apple iPhone and android  can still pick up, even in Do Not Disturb mode, can be turned off. Your friends might think you're a monster for doing so, but here's how to deal with the notifications.

AMBER is short for "America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response" but the alerts are actually named after a 9-year-old girl named Amber Hagerman who went missing in 1996 and was later found to have been murdered. The concept is that people who receive the alert can aid in the search for missing children, and while it's a bit absurd to assume every person who gets the message is going to sprint outside hunting for the child, over 600 children have been recovered. That data is probably suspect since it's almost impossible to directly connect the alert to the act of saving the child, but the hope is that spreading the word will help reverse the grim statistic that most abducted children are murdered within three hours of going missing.

How to turn off notifications on iPhone iOS devices?

  • Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Tap on Notifications and scroll all the way to the bottom.
  • Under the Government Alerts section, toggle the AMBER Alerts, Emergency Alerts, and Public Safety Alerts options on or off to enable or disable them.
  • Turning off AMBER and other alerts can cost lives, including yours. If a natural disaster is coming your way, and you don't know about it, you have no way to save your life or the life of your family.

That's why they're loud and shocking. They're meant to get your attention, instantly — and big, loud, and noisy is the way to do that.  So, while you can disable them, you shouldn't. Not unless you have some other way to be reliably alerted about emergencies.
