iOS 17.2 Beta Version codes indicate that Apple will allow us to install third-party applications
Prioritizing user security, Apple had not allowed the installation of third-party applications on iPhone and iPad devices. However, the codes in the beta version of iOS 17.2 indicate that this situation is about to change.
The U.S.-based tech giant Apple, last year, in compliance with the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), abandoned the lightning port in favor of the USB-C port. In its latest iPhone 15 series and 2nd generation AirPods Pro, Apple replaced the lightning port with a USB-C port. Now, DMA has put forth a robust plan against monopolies.
According to the decision made by DMA, Apple will now allow the installation of applications from sources other than its own app store on its devices. Users were already finding ways to do this through various methods, but DMA's decision and the codes in the beta version of iOS 17.2 suggest that Apple will officially endorse this practice."
Apple had previously restricted the installation of third-party applications to ensure device security and to securely preserve users' personal information. However, many users had found ways to bypass this restriction and install various applications on their devices through alternative methods.
Another reason for this restriction was that Apple used to pay app developers a 30% commission. Allowing the installation of third-party applications would potentially impact Apple's revenue from in-app purchases. Therefore, it seems that Apple is now considering departing from its long-standing policy.
Apple has until March 6, 2024, to comply. However, it is believed that Apple will explore every possible avenue before that date. The company has been adamant about not opening iMessage to other platforms, a topic of debate for years.
While device security is a sensitive issue for the company, it appears that Apple may not relent on complying with the decisions of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The expectation is that the company will adhere to the rulings of DMA. As DMA aims to reduce competition among technology companies, it could impose stricter sanctions if necessary.
