Sony has revealed the availability of its ZH8 8K HDR Full Array LED TV, which is expected to go on sale in Europe in early June. Bringing together Sony’s finest developments in picture quality and sound delivery alongside enhanced user experience, the ZH8 makes a compelling proposition for film entertainment lovers and gamers alike.
By utilising Sony’s best-in-class Picture Processor X1™ Ultimate, clear and precise picture quality is achieved for a highly realistic viewing experience. Even images filmed in 4K and 2K are upscaled close to 8K by 8K X-Reality™ PRO using a unique 8K database. Resolution of each subject is then optimised by Object-based Super Resolution to reproduce virtually real-world textures.
The ZH8 features Sony’s signature Acoustic Multi-Audio, which includes a vibrating frame tweeter that enables the sound to follow the action for a more immersive listening experience. Independent amplifiers are controlled separately to precisely manage sound positioning in higher frequencies, enhancing the sound pressure and stability for more realism. Sony claims it’s managed to do this without compromising the TV’s minimalist one-slate design and super-thin bezel.
For the next generation of gaming consoles, the ZH8 series of TVs will support 8K at 60fps as well as 4K at 120fps. These high frame rates and fast response times will be delivered via HDMI inputs.
The new ZH8 TVs will also incorporate Netflix Calibrated Mode. This feature was specially developed for viewers to enjoy Netflix originals by reproducing the same picture quality on the TV as on the studio evaluation master. The ZH8 is also an IMAX Enhanced product that can achieve high-quality color, contrast, clarity, and sound for viewers to be able to take full advantage of IMAX Enhanced content.
Another feature that’s new to this range of 8K HDR TVs is Ambient Optimization, a new technology that claims to optimize picture and sound quality to best suit the viewer’s environment. Ambient Optimization automatically adjusts picture brightness to the ambient light of a room, boosting brightness in bright rooms and dialing back the levels in darker rooms for a perfect view. The system can even detect objects in a room, such as curtains and furniture, that can absorb or reflect sound. The system fine-tunes the acoustics so the sound isn’t compromised by a room’s contents.

The ZH8 line-up features Android TV and has Google Assistant, Google Play Store, and Chromecast built-in, which means there’s easy access to online content, services, and devices. With Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa-enabled devices, users can cast and control videos from YouTube using Google Home, or they can change the channels, increase the volume simply by giving a voice command to an Alexa-enabled device. Finally, Sony has incorporated Apple AirPlay 2 for users to stream movies, music, games, and photos directly from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
