To turn off AMBER alerts and other public safety alerts on your iPhone (which you should leave enabled)

The AMBER alarm system is a national emergency response system designed to find abducted children. While it is officially an acronym that stands for "America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response," it is actually named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl who was kidnapped and murdered in 1996.

By default, your iPhone is configured to notify you when AMBER alerts are issued and the Do Not Disturb settings are not taken into account. You can receive AMBER alerts at any time of the day when they are issued.

If you don't want to receive these notifications, you can turn them off. Note, however, that if you disable AMBER Alerts, you will not be notified of kidnapping incidents in time and will therefore be less able to help authorities safely recover victims.

How to turn off AMBER Alerts on your iPhone

1. Launch the app settings.

2. Tap "Notifications".

3. In the "Government Alerts" section, turn off the AMBER Alerts option by swiping the button to the left so that it is white instead of green.

Note that there are other government warnings in the same section. Although we recommend that you leave them enabled, you can also switch emergency alerts and public safety alerts. These are alerts generated by local or federal agencies when they pose a significant threat to public safety.
