The era of facial recognition on Instagram!

Instagram is one of the most used social media applications. The social media app has users of almost all ages. For young people, there are various measures within the Instagram application. Instagram will now be able to detect whether users are younger or older than 18 with facial recognition.

Instagram brings new options for young users

The social media app has introduced a new system that states that users are over 18 years old. With the facial recognition system, which will first be used in the United States, users will be able to upload videos to prove that they are over 18 years old.

In addition to uploading identity images on Instagram, users will be able to reveal their age with the videos they shoot from now on. For this system, it has been agreed with the UK-based Yoti, a global identity and biometric technology company. Instagram underlines that Yoti's facial recognition technology will only be used to determine age.

Instagram made the following statements on the subject:

We test this to make sure young people and adults have the right experience for their age group. When we find out if someone is young (13-17), we provide age-appropriate experiences, such as automatically hiding their accounts, blocking unwanted people from adult they don't know, and limiting advertisers' options.

Instagram prevents people under the age of 13 from signing up for Instagram and says new users should share their age. If a user is between the ages of 13 and 17, the app automatically makes their account private and limits the ways advertisers can target them.

Yoti says his artificial intelligence accurately detects 99.65 percent of people between the ages of 13 and 17. In addition, it was announced that the detection of people aged 6-11 years was made with 98.91 percent accuracy. The company also stresses that its system complies with the UK and European Union guidelines of the General Data Protection Regulation.

Another new method will be for teens to ask their common followers over the age of 18 to vouch for verification of their age. Instagram wants three people to verify a user's age. People who vouch for others will face a number of options to verify the age group of the user in question, such as "under 13 years old", "13-17 years old", "18-20 years old" or "21". To verify the age of a young user, all three users must select the same option.

Instagram has stated that both they and Yoti will delete the videos once the user's age is confirmed. When teens choose to verify their age through an identity, the social media app emphasizes that the information is encrypted and stored securely.
